18th August 2007 Fun Day

The third annual Finstock Fun Day was again a great success, again despite the terrible weather.

As usual, we started on the Friday evening, and after the Community Concert in the village hall, we were entertained by Loose Covers. It was unfortunate that the Country & Western band had to cancel at short notice but we all had a good time and bar takings were high for the small attendance.

On the Saturday, the football started at 9am as many of us were setting up for the rest of the day’s events. Lady Rotherwick opened the Fun Day at midday and the main marquee was full of craft stalls, the church had a stall, Friends of Finstock School ran the teas and cakes stand, we had archery, landrovers and a casting competition on the allotment field and a bouncy dome and fairground rides at the other end of the playing field near the owls and huskies.

The climbing wall, was as always, very popular, and this year we did not have to charge for each climb since we had received a grant of £701 from the County Council’s Chill Out Fund. We were also supported by The Plough, so thank you also to Jo and Martin. The bar and bbq were both hugely successful – we took over £1,000 on the bbq – so that could have benefited from the poor weather.

The Red Arrows fly past was great, on time of course, very low beneath the clouds, and too fast for most of us to catch on camera.

It was great to have so many helpers from Thursday to Sunday, helping out with tasks such as putting up tents, shopping, marking out the field, selling raffle tickets, baking potatoes, serving and cooking at the bbq and serving behind the bar and then dismantling tents and sorting out the litter. We also had lots of younger helpers so thank you also to all the youth in the community who joined in.
